How to control mosquitoes at home

How to control mosquitoes at home

Control mosquitoes outside your home
Eliminate standing water where mosquitoes could lay their eggs

  • Once a week, empty, scrub, turn over, cover, or throw away anything that collects water such as tires, buckets, flower pots, toys, pools, birdbaths, flower pot saucers, and dumpsters. Mosquitoes lay their eggs near water.
  • Cover well the containers to store water (buckets, cisterns, barrels to collect rainwater) so that mosquitoes cannot enter to lay eggs.
  • For open containers, use wire mesh with holes smaller than the size of an adult mosquito.
  • Use larvicides to treat large containers of water that are not used for drinking and cannot be covered or emptied.
  • If you have a septic tank, repair any cracks or slots. Plug open vents or pipes. Use wire mesh with holes smaller than the size of an adult mosquito.
